Estate planning for the elderly is not what it used to be. People are living longer, the types of assets people own are much more diverse than they used to be (it's not just a home, some CDs and a checking account anymore), and long-term debilitating diagnoses are commonplace (e.g., Alzheimer's, MS, Parkinson's, etc.). Planning for incapacity and death, coordinating long-term care for elderly parents, and managing their assets during these periods can create scenarios that many of us were never taught how to handle in our formal professional training.
There exist many traps when creating an estate plan that can have serious unintended consequences for seniors and their families when it comes time to deal with the challenges of aging.
